"We have more energy and we're not tired. We work out for about 90 minutes five days a week. We do the treadmill, exercise, swim, jump in the hot tub, shower and go home. And we feel like a million bucks. "

Artist-in-Residence Program

Since fall 2000, Schowalter Villa has offered classes in pottery taught by one of our artists-in-residence, Paul Friesen.  Schowalter Villa residents, members of the Hesston Wellness Center, college students and students of all ages have been active in a variety of classes.

Paul involves other community art professionals, including but not limited to, photographers, painters and sculptors.  With the involvement of all these different groups, these programs not only teach specific arts but give excellent opportunities for community members to interact with people of different age groups, including the elderly, educating the public that “life is good” after retirement.

Paul’s dreams for this innovative program also include encouraging other artists to set-up their studios on the Schowalter campus, creating an atmosphere of creativity and knowledge that would keep our residents and community members “learning and growing” in a variety of artistic endeavors.  In 2002 KAHSA recognized the program with it's Innovation of the Year award.
